Residents and
business owners were present regarding their recent assessment letters. Supervisor Hammond stated that this Town
Board cannot influence the Assessor, nor would you want them to be able
to. There is a process in place for you
to follow. The Town Board discussed tax
rate and budget.
Several business
owners spoke about the percentage their assessments went up with the present
economy situation. In light of the real
estate market, the increase does not make sense.
Supervisor Hammond
attributed the increase in taxes to the jump in workers compensation and
retirement costs. Fuel and asphalt
costs are also up. The Town switched
the employee’s medical program for a savings.
Workers compensation went way up due to two (2) highway employees going
out permanently. The Town Board decided
the payments from Waste Management would be given back to the residents to
reduce their taxes. This Town Board
will try to keep taxes as flat as possible.
Each year the Board holds budget workshops that are open to the public,
as well as a public hearing. The public
is encouraged to attend both. The State
and County collect sales tax and the way it is allocated back is not according
to the proportion collected in each Town.
Supervisor Hammond encouraged residents to attend the County Board
Meeting scheduled Tuesday, March 16 in the evening at the County Court
House. County Supervisors hold three (3)
board meetings a year in the evening, with the rest being held on the third
Tuesday at 9 a.m.
Wayne County Sheriff
Barry Verts introduced himself. He
outlined programs that have been implemented and problems that affect the tax
rates. The Sheriff’s Department is
working to establish shared services with the Town to help keep costs
down.
Chief Colella
commented on the recent article in the newspaper. He had presented his annual report which showed crime stats were
up. The Department is larger and being
aggressive. His goal is to create a safe traffic environment and aggressive
traffic enforcement.
Supervisor Hammond
informed the Board the Veteran’s Administration has a mobile unit available
that will come to the Town Complex to treat Veterans at no charge. The mobile unit would be parked in the Town
Complex parking lot. If the County can
find three (3) offices, the VA could provide a doctor, psychologist and nurse.

Judge Reinstein met
with resistance at the county level regarding Veteran’s Court. There have been 117 veterans through the
jail system. If the Veterans could get
the help and treatment maybe they wouldn’t be there.
Councilman Maul
reported the Regional Ambulance Committee has been meeting with the
participants to present their fact-findings.
The Committee, which has a representative from each municipality, will
only make recommendations to the Boards.
It will be up to the Boards to make the decisions. The Macedon Town Ambulance is a business
model that works with the goal to serve the four (4) municipalities.
CORRESPONDENCE – The Supervisor presented the following:
Town of Walworth
notification of proposed Local Law No. 3 to amend Chapter 180 of the Walworth
Town Code entitled “Zoning”.
The American Red Cross blood drive on 2/25/10 received 34 donors and helped 102 patients.
